This study aims to analyze the relationship between a collection of five poems by Sapardi Djoko Damono and the underlying social realities through a sociological literary approach, particularly Ian Watt's theory. The five poems analyzed— Hatiku Selembar Daun, Yang Fana adalah Waktu, Aku Ingin, Hujan Bulan Juni, and Duka-Mu Abadi—contain Indonesian social and cultural values that reflect the dynamics of societal life. This analysis reveals that Sapardi's poems not only depict individual emotions but also reflect societal conditions, including the hustle of life that overlooks beauty, the uncertainty of time, simplicity in relationships, as well as grief and wisdom in facing emotions. The findings indicate that the themes of these poems—such as love, time, grief, and wisdom—are closely related to social values like mutual cooperation (gotong royong), sincerity, and empathy within Indonesian society. In conclusion, Sapardi Djoko Damono's poems serve as reflective mediums for Indonesia's complex social realities while emphasizing the importance of traditional values that remain relevant in modern life. This study contributes to understanding the relationship between literature and contemporary Indonesian society and opens opportunities for further research on the sociology of literature in local social and cultural contexts.
