THE EFFECT OF ESP COURSE BOOK ON STUDENT’S SPEAKING ABILITY

Abstract This research discuss about applying the course book for teaching speaking using ESP (English for Specific Purpose) in the class especially for Biology students. This study is categorized as quasi experimental research. This study intent to know whether the speaking ability of students taught by using ESP course book get better score than those taught by using general English book. To know whether it has effect or not, the data for this research was scored of the pretest and posttest, and they were compared. The scores from both the pretest and posttest were analyzed by using analysis of ANCOVA. Based on the result, the data shows that result test in experiment class is higher than result of test in control group. It showed by the mean scored of both test. It can be concluded that teaching using ESP course book is effective in improving the students’ speaking ability. By using ESP course book, the students show significant confident to speak up in front of the class because they have already got the material appropriate with the syllabus.
